Page 2 of 9- Building the Brewery

The brewery building was formerly the carbon bunker for Kinlochleven's aluminium smelter - hence the huge concrete storage silos that still remain high above the brewery.

As you can see, when we took possession of the building, Kinlochleven Land Development Trust had already tidied it up.  They'd cleaned it of all traces of its previous life, put in large modern glass walls and arch windows, and a concrete floor for our vessels to stand on.

Then, on 3rd January 2002, our vessels started to arrive from their previous life at a brewery in Watford in the south of England.  Naturally enough for Kinlochleven, it was raining that day - but rain's a good omen in Chinese folklore so we weren't that despondent.

The next two months resembled trying to fit together a three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle... we had to teach ourselves about tig welding, burner flues, augers and all sorts of new things...

Eventually, the brewery was complete and we brewed our first beers (Latitude and Tempest) at the end of February 2002.
